The Dreamers (2003): Crazy yet Sensible

I’ve been very busy for a couple of months, but now I’m back! I wonder if someone misses me. Hahaha So, let’s get down to business. When I was a kid, oldies force me to close my eyes whenever there is a daring scene. Even a kissing scene is like rated R then since I’m still young. But now I’m old enough. I can freely watch R-rated movies anytime I want. So, the first in line is the movie The Dreamers.

It is about Mathew (Michael Pitt), a young American who is studying French in Paris during the 1960’s. Aside from his study, he is also fond of the cinema where he met Isabelle (Eva Green) and Theo (Louis Garrel). Their friendship was awkward at first but as the story goes on, they develop a bond that sometimes breaks their sanity.

I’m not really fond of watching drama and romance movies. This one caught my attention for having an NC-17 rating from the US MCAA (if I’m not mistaken). Yes, there are exposed sexual organs and love scenes that for others, may find it unsuitable for children. I believe that the Director was able to present these scenes in the most artistic way possible instead of the usual treatment in pornography.

What I love about the movie is the crazy story. I envy the characters because they have been into real fun. They are drinking wine, smoking, and playing silly games. I also love how the movie was able to instil scenes from ’68 Paris student riots. No matter how the crazy the three characters are, some of their conversations are really sensible. The movie itself is well-crafted and very intelligent.
