Deliver Us from Evil (2014): One of the Best 2014 Horrors

Horror movies are my favorite. But among the releases the years, there are only few who stands out and one of them is Deliver Us from Evil.

At first, I wasn’t interested in the movie because my colleague tells me that it wasn’t good. I believe her, and it’s a mistake. I shouldn’t have listen to her and watch it in the cinema. But that was a couple of months ago. When I happen to have a copy, I watch it still. And I was surprised that it was way better than what I’ve been told.

Deliver Us from Evil is something that I’ve been long waited for. It was inspired by the terrifying booked by Ralph Sarchie known as Beware the Night. But let set things straight, the story line of the movies wasn’t based on actual events at all. It is completely fictional. But the character of Ralph Sarchie is true; he is a cop who happens to be a demonologist as well. He helps people with supernatural problems.

The story line is the same, he is a cop who hunted down criminals and he slowly turns to a demon hunter because of one of the cases he handles. He was an anti-Christ, but he was turned to be a believer. This gives him strength in facing the hardest and beastly criminals he has ever faced.

It gives me creeps. The tension is there and my heart beats fast at some point. It chills me to the bone, and it scares the hell out of me. I never thought that it will be this good. It will let you engage in the story as it unravels the horror gradually.

I love the whole movie. It is the only exorcist movie that was able to capture my attention and interest. I watch it from the beginning until the end with my full focus on it. It wasn’t boring like the other movies of its genre. This may be because of the perfect combination of action and horror. It is one of the best and the greatest movies I’ve seen so far.

Neighbors (2014): it should be Neigh-bore!

After I saw the trailer of Neighbors, I was very excited to watch it. But I wasn’t able to see it on cinema so I just waited for it to be available in Blu-Ray. I didn’t buy one; I just borrow from a friend. And I’m happy because I don’t have to spend money for it, because in my opinion, it doesn’t worth it.

Zac Efron, Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne are some of the actors that I enjoyed watching the most. This is the first reason why I’m excited to see the movie. I thought it would be great because the trailer is great. But unfortunately, it wasn’t. They should have named it neigh-bores instead.

The movie is about a couple with a newborn baby who just moved in their house. At first, everything is fine until a fraternity moved in the next house. They have to deal with the unexpected difficulties that will challenge their relationship.

It was really boring. And there are moments when I choose to play zombie tsunami on my phone while I’m watching it. I don’t know. There are just scenes that will turn someone sleepy head. It wasn’t that inviting at all. The concept is great but it failed to deliver.

Yes, there are funny scenes, but I’ve already seen these in the trailer so I’m really expecting it. Aside from that, there is nothing left to surprise the audience. Very disappointing.

The Other Woman (2014): Hilarious, Awesome and Sexy!

At first, I was not interested to watch The Other Woman at all. I didn’t even bother to watch its trailer because I thought that it wasn’t good. That proves that I am really judgemental. But there come this time when my curiosity strike when I saw that Nicki Minaj was part of the cast. I’m not her fan, I am just curious on how she plays a role in a movie.

I’m confident to say that The Other Woman is one of the best American Romantic Comedy that I’ve ever seen. It makes me laugh so hard that I was able to relive my stress without digging into ice creams, chocolates and beer. It doesn’t have a single boring scene that will make me take a look at my phone. And it was, really a very great movie.

It is hilarious. There are tons of scenes that are genuinely funny. It is Awesome. The story line was superb and I never thought of it at any moment in my life, a first in the love-triangle or shall we say love-square. It is sexy. The three leading ladies are gorgeous in their own ways.

Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann, and Kate Upton were really great in the film. They are believable and flawless. When it comes to Nicki Minaj, I don’t think that her character is necessary. In my opinion, there wouldn’t be any difference if the character of Lydia was performed by an extra instead of her enormous behind.

I wouldn’t spoil other information about the plot of the story. But I highly recommend that people should watch it – especially those who are down, stressed and have a lot of problems in life. It is a movie that wouldn’t give you any reason to frown.

Willow Creek (2013): Super Boring

Zombies, vampires, serial killers, ghosts, werewolf, UFOs, and psychopaths, I’ve seen it all. So when I read the synopsis of the Willow Creek, I said “wow, this is interesting, a new creature of terror.” The creature I’m talking about is the Bigfoot.

Bigfoot is a tall ape-like creature that rumors to roam the forest. There are accounts of sightings but there is no strong proof yet that it really exists. This is the mission of Jim who brings along her girlfriend Kelly to look for evidence that Bigfoot really exists. They went to the Willow Creek even though they are refused to enter, and they were able to find the “creature” they are looking for.

Willow Creek have the same elements like the Blair Witch Project. The main characters are in the forest, there are strange sounds, they are documenting everything and they found what they are looking for and that is it! This is what I hate about this film, it lack originality. And the sad thing is I never really like the Blair Witch Project either. For me, these films are both Super Boring.

The climax is all that matters, it is kind of creepy but it wasn’t worth the wait. They will let you drawn in the film, and they will give you the thrills at the end – which is not terrifying at all. I wish that they are more shocking things in it than the one they have shown.

This is not a really great movie. It actually sucks. But the plot was good though. It was something new for me but it fails to impress me.

Wicked Little Things (2006): Wicked but Not Great

Some films in the After Dark Horror Fest have great feedbacks. One of the movies that got my attention is the Wicked Little Things. It has a real nice plot and a great trailer as well. But unfortunately, these are the only things that are great about it. And the whole movie itself is not really great at all.

The concept is great, really. But the execution is a big failure. After I watch the trailer, I expected that the movie will be great. It is about a town where zombie kids are roams the area and kill people every night. Creepy, right? But unfortunately, the good plot was not transferred to the motion picture. Disappointing.

It was very rare to have a new twist and story line about zombies. And this one wastes it. It fails to scare me, get my attention or convince me to watch it eagerly. It is also saddening that they wasn’t able to do that even when they already scared me on the trailer alone.

I watch it for three times, part by part. Do you wonder why? It is because it makes me sleepy. I guess I need to cut it off here. You can still watch it though I do not advice it. We have our own preferences and it is up to yours if you will agree with mine.

Mr. Peabody and Sherman (2014): Educational and Fun!

Most animated movies are created to provide moral lessons to the viewers – of all ages. But Mr. Peabody and Sherman don’t just to that. This movie still has lots of moral values, but they also feature history lessons.

I’ve grown to hate history subjects because they are super boring, but this animated movie turns that upside down. It was able to teach me history with fun, which make it one of the greatest animated movies that I’ve seen. It manages to teach me things I was not aware of about world history.

The plot of Mr. Peabody and Sherman is quirky. It is about a genius dog Mr. Peabody who adopted a young boy named Sherman. Mr. Peabody was a great parent and a great teacher as well. He teaches History to Sherman in a very cool way, using the Time Machine he invented. But something went wrong when Sherman becomes a stubborn kid. This brings their adventure in a whole new level.

I can’t say anything bad about this movie because it was really great. I hope that History teachers can somehow include this in their lesson plan to give a twist in their teaching method.

The Dreamers (2003): Crazy yet Sensible

I’ve been very busy for a couple of months, but now I’m back! I wonder if someone misses me. Hahaha So, let’s get down to business. When I was a kid, oldies force me to close my eyes whenever there is a daring scene. Even a kissing scene is like rated R then since I’m still young. But now I’m old enough. I can freely watch R-rated movies anytime I want. So, the first in line is the movie The Dreamers.

It is about Mathew (Michael Pitt), a young American who is studying French in Paris during the 1960’s. Aside from his study, he is also fond of the cinema where he met Isabelle (Eva Green) and Theo (Louis Garrel). Their friendship was awkward at first but as the story goes on, they develop a bond that sometimes breaks their sanity.

I’m not really fond of watching drama and romance movies. This one caught my attention for having an NC-17 rating from the US MCAA (if I’m not mistaken). Yes, there are exposed sexual organs and love scenes that for others, may find it unsuitable for children. I believe that the Director was able to present these scenes in the most artistic way possible instead of the usual treatment in pornography.

What I love about the movie is the crazy story. I envy the characters because they have been into real fun. They are drinking wine, smoking, and playing silly games. I also love how the movie was able to instil scenes from ’68 Paris student riots. No matter how the crazy the three characters are, some of their conversations are really sensible. The movie itself is well-crafted and very intelligent.
